Starting out in VEX Robotics with TRL
VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) is the world's largest robotics competition with over 20,000 competition teams in over 60 countries. VRC provides a technology platform, curriculum and support to help students from elementary through college age learn a broad base of skills, all in the spirit of competition.
TRL provides a community to support new teams and programs in the NC Research Triangle area through workshops, ranking sessions and our local team tournament. Joining a league is a great way to meet other local teams, get support and learn from several of the top teams in the state.
If you are new to VEX, you can get started by joining an existing team or starting a new one. Most teams in TRL have 3-5 students per robot, but teams range from 1 to 10 students. Most TRL teams are affiliated with schools, either as a club, part of a larger student organization such as Technology Student Association, or as a spin-off of robotics classes typically using the VEX curriculum. Due to the small structure and comparatively low entry barrier, many new teams in TRL are independent teams formed by community groups, parents or the students themselves.
Teams compete in VRC competitions sanctioned by the REC Foundation. Through their website at RobotEvents.com, all VRC teams worldwide register for the competition season. Once your team is registered for the season, you also sign-up for competition events at RobotEvents.com. TRL is a VEX event. Most VEX events are a single day of competition, but TRL includes support, workshops, multiple practice and competitive ranking sessions, and culminates in the TRL League Tournament. TRL also hosts the NC VRC Capital Qualifier - a single day event open to all VRC teams.
Competition and judged award winners of the TRL tournament will go on to the NC State Championship, which in turn sends its winning teams directly to the VEX World Championships, where 20,000 students from around the world compete to be crowned world champion. TRL teams have represented North Carolina at VEX Worlds for 5 years running.
